Arrival- When you come to school in the morning, you will arrive by bus or car. I will be waiting for you in the classroom at 8:15- school starts at 8:30.
Before you come to school each day, you should have: your backpack, a healthy snack, lunch from home or money for hot lunch, and your red plastic folder for notes or papers that comes to school each day. Please leave all toys at home, we have plenty to share in the classroom! Make sure you have eaten breakfast or you can go to the cafeteria (gym) and purchase breakfast when you arrive at school in the morning.
Before you come into the classroom you will hang up your backpack and coat on the hook outside in the hallway. Look for your name. I will be there to help you! This is a great time to use the bathroom, get a drink and sign up for lunch. ( no worries, I will help you with all of this, and after a few times, you will be doing this without me!)
We have playtime at this time of day, for many reasons. I like to chat with you and check in to see how you are feeling today. While some children eat breakfast quickly in the room, you will have a chance to play with some toys and make new friends!

Morning Meeting- After we get settled in for the day, we will come to the rug for our Morning Meeting. You will sit on a letter in a circle, and we will start our day! This circle will be very important for us. You will sit on your bottom, with your legs crossed, and you will practice listening to me, your teacher. Sometimes I sit on the floor with you or in a big chair. We will learn each other's names, and say hello. This is called a Greeting. We will start out simple by just saying hello to each other. I know you can do this! I like to look at your beautiful faces, and smile. I do that a lot! You can practice this at home with your family. It is easy to do!
After our greeting we move so we can see the easel. I use big paper and write a short note to you. I will read the note to you. Your job is to look with your eyes, and listen with your ears. This is called our Message.
The third part of morning meeting is Shares and News. I will teach you how to do this. I love this part of the meeting because I learn so much about you! We do telling shares in our classroom for the first part of the year. A telling share is when you talk and we listen. I will do it first and then when you are ready, it will be your turn. A telling share is something you want to tell your classmates and me. An example is: I went fishing with my Grandpa and caught a big fish!
After shares we sometimes do an activity- either a song, or some type of movement.
Morning meeting is officially over! We sometimes get a quick drink, then move on to our day!
We do the Calendar, Hundred Chart and Sight words after morning meeting. These activities are done each day throughout the year!

Writers Workshop/ Handwriting
This boy is holding a pencil and writing on paper. Writers Workshop is when we draw pictures that tell about something we did. You can draw a picture about riding the bus, feeding your dog, brushing your teeth, or climbing a tree. Everyone can write using pictures! That is how we start the year with writing. Do you know some authors write books with NO WORDS??? They sure do! You will be an author of a story too! Writers workshop is very fun,but we have to work quietly so our brains can think about what we want to write or draw about. I will model how to do this every day , and you will give it a try.
Sometimes we do handwriting, which is practicing and learning how to make your letters. We start with the upper case letters then move on to lower case letters later on in the year. We use a program called Handwriting Without Tears. Your family can look it up on the computer too. I use our big computer to show you how to make the letters, and you can use our IPAD to practice. It is all very fun. We practice making big lines, little lines, big curves and little curves with wooden pieces, and dough.

Snack/Recess
When I signal it is time to stop working, we wash our hands and get our healthy snack from our backpacks. We sit in our chair and eat our own snack in our seats. We clean up our own trash and look at a book if we finish before Recess.
I will walk you to the door where you go out for outside recess. I am on duty often, but some days there are other teachers outside instead of me. You will go outside and play on the playground. It is really fun. But we have to be safe, so we show you the safe way to use the playground equipment. We don't want anyone to get hurt! I would be very sad!
When the bell rings, you line up by the little white shed. I will show you how to do this the first day of school! After recess you get a quick drink and use the bathroom if you need to do that. You can always use the bathroom during another time. The bathrooms are across the hall from our classroom. You will have to go by yourself, as I have to stay in the room with the rest of the class. I will show you where everything is on the first day of school! No worries!

Phonics Soup/Readers Workshop/RTI- After morning recess we will do many different activities that will help you learn your letters, your letter sounds, and sight words. We use a program called Phonics Soup for your letter sounds. It is very fun and easy to learn. We practice making the sound and we learn a motion to go with it. For example, our first sound we learn is MMMMMM as in Marvelous Marshmallows. We rub our tummy with our hand and we close our lips and say MMMMMM. I bet some of you toasted marshmallows this summer!
We will also learn sight words and practice rhyming words. I have many fun games to play to help you learn these important things. We will be very busy!
Readers Workshop- You will learn very quickly that your teacher, Mrs. Cartier, just loves books. I will share so many wonderful stories with you this year! You will have time to look at books, and take some time to really look at their pictures. Do you know when you open a book, you can go anywhere? I have a special story to read to you about a boy and a dragon. If you use your imagination, you will just love to listen to this book!
During readers workshop, you will look at books. Soon you will start to notice many things about books. I will show you a few tricks about books too. They are magical. When you start to notice some sight words, you will be soon reading books of your very own! I will give you plenty of time to learn all about books. I love to read! Where do you like to look at a book? I will be asking for you to bring in your favorite book from home. If you don't have one, you can use one of ours, we have many books!
RTI- The fancy name for this is Response to Intervention- This is the time when you practice what you know so far while I work with children who need a little bit of extra help. Everyone needs help at some time, even me! Do you like to be a helper? I hope so!

After lunch and recess, we will have a few minutes of quiet time. This is usually when I read a story that you will listen to and you will be so excited to hear me read. I like to change my voice a lot to get your attention! Sometimes we lie down on the rug or spread out to just take a break. But we don't nap because you need your sleep at night!
It is time to recharge because our day is not over yet!
Mathematics- Every day we will have math. We will start the year off with exploring our tools we use during our Investigations units of study. We use so many supplies that they take up a whole bookcase in our room! We sometimes start our Math Workshop with a video to count to One Hundred! How high can you count? I will teach you to count by fives and tens too! When we count to 100 we do exercises and sometimes we get a little bit crazy- but always safety first!

This year we will have our specials after read aloud, which is after our lunch/recess break. going to our special classes. Once I get the schedule I will let you know, but for now plan on wearing sneakers just in case we have PE on our first day!
That is our entire day of Kindergarten. Wow! It sure is a long day! But we will have loads of fun and laughs. When I say goodbye to you at the end of the day, I always tell you that your homework is: go outside and play when you leave school, eat your dinner, and go right to bed! You will be tired! I know I am! You should be in bed by 7:30 pm.
I am in bed by 8:30 every night of the school week. I need sleep to help my brain grow, and so do you!
